De-tox

Wes is doing his rotation this month in toxocology. So if you live in the Chicago area and decide to, let's say, drink some ammonia, take some PCP, or overdose on Tylenol, he's the person to call. He is the number for poison control (at certain dates and times). On Tuesday, he had "long call," meaning he had the pager from 5pm until the next morning. Around 9pm, the calls and pages started coming...and kept coming. He was up until 4am working on five cases.

The problem with home call is that, if you have a downtown Chicago condo, the whole familiy has home call. Liz, sleeping in the bedroom with no door, has home call, waking up to ringing phones, barking dogs, and Wes talking, as quietly as possible, with the attending. Lucy also has home call. Wes said she was up the whole night with him barking, pacing, and -- inexplicably -- sniffing. Could she actually smell the toxin over the phone? The next day, we were all tired -- but Lucy in particular. She was absolutely worn out. I worry that she won't handle infancy well. Will she get up with me for feedings or to soothe a fussing baby?
