De-tox

Wes is doing his rotation this month in toxocology. So if you live in the Chicago area and decide to, let's say, drink some ammonia, take some PCP, or overdose on Tylenol, he's the person to call. He is the number for poison control (at certain dates and times). On Tuesday, he had "long call," meaning he had the pager from 5pm until the next morning. Around 9pm, the calls and pages started coming...and kept coming. He was up until 4am working on five cases.

The problem with home call is that, if you have a downtown Chicago condo, the whole familiy has home call. Liz, sleeping in the bedroom with no door, has home call, waking up to ringing phones, barking dogs, and Wes talking, as quietly as possible, with the attending. Lucy also has home call. Wes said she was up the whole night with him barking, pacing, and -- inexplicably -- sniffing. Could she actually smell the toxin over the phone? The next day, we were all tired -- but Lucy in particular. She was absolutely worn out. I worry that she won't handle infancy well. Will she get up with me for feedings or to soothe a fussing baby?

Psycho Puppy

Lucy has, evidently, decided one of two things:
1) She is not happy about the forthcoming member of our family and has decided to show us that by tearing apart the dog mat that goes in her crate and that we have owned for more than three years.
2) She thinks we need to redecorate.

The 5 D's

Last weekend, Wes played dodgeball with some of his emergency medicine colleagues. It amused me greatly that trauma specialists came up with this plan. Wes was considered to be a particular threat in the game since, as he put it, "no one else was a Division I pitcher." Ah, yes. I was out buying my first piece of maternity clothing for most of the game, which was probably a good choice since, as I found on arrival, there was nowhere to be in the gym that did not put me in peril of getting hit by a flying dogeball (and my hand-eye coordination is notoriously bad). It did seem like those who visited enjoyed themselves. Wes's teammates implored me to play, but alas, Wes had forbidden it.

Also known as "The Wesley Self Pavillion." Notice that it has failed to grow any hair.

You know you're using an inner-city public library restroom when...

A. You have to get buzzed in by the librarian.

B. There's remnant pieces of a pregnancy test sitting on the back of the toilet.

C. All of the above.

On Davidson

Two random pieces of note about Davidson since their departure from the NCAA Tournament:

1. Last week, Davidson College was the #1 Google search on the internet. Davidson University (as it was incorrectly called in one of Jay Mariotti's articles) was Google search #4.

2. Stephen Curry was on Conan O'Brien's show on Friday night. My favorite part of the interview -- which we watched on YouTube because we're too old to stay up that late, even in Central Time -- was when Curry talked about going home from Detroit Sunday night, arriving in Charlotte at 11 PM, and arriving (albeit a few minutes late) for an 8:30 AM class the next morning because that's what the coach expected of him. That's my Davidson.
