We get packages at the house pretty frequently these days. What with baby purchases, baby gifts, and -- oh, yeah, books -- there's often a UPS sticky on our mailbox to let us know we have a package waiting in the mail room. Yesterday, much to our surprise, there were two boxes waiting for us -- one anticipated (some books of essays from Powells), one not quite. In the very, very heavy book from Elsevier was "Wes's book" -- i.e. a new emergency medicine textbook edited by the head of NMH's emergency department Jim Adams, to which Wes contributed a chapter during his second year of residency.
It was really exciting unpacking the book, seeing all the doctors on the page of editors whom we personally or professionally know, and then seeing Wes in the list of contributors. Wes is one of few residents who was invited to write a chapter for Dr. Adam's book, and he definitely

enjoyed the process -- and probably knows more about treating hypoglycemia than he ever anticipated. I even got a small claim to fame -- I taught Wes how to use text boxes to create a flow chart for his chapter, and it's now prominently featured in his chapter!
Unfortunately, at
$189 a copy, we won't be able to send a signed copy to each and every one of our family members and friends.

Congratulations, Wes! I learned at Penn State that publishing meant more than having your name at the beginning of the book. Great line item on a resume and so early in your career. Of course, behind every good man is a great woman. But I'm prejudice, just a bit!
