ANIMAL(s)!

I ran another race today. This was a 10k, so shorter than last week, and more of a recreational crowd than the one at Soldier Field (made possible, I suppose, by the shorter distance). It was a fundraiser for Lincoln Park Zoo, a place that Wes and I both love, so I didn't mind the entry fee. Plus, there's a great t-shirt with a lion on it that comes with! Wes is on the easiest shift by far of his year, so he was able to come with me this morning and cheer me on. He thought about running it, too, but he's having some knee problems and doesn't want to aggravate things. He's so darn competitive, too, that I don't think he wants to do it if he can't do it well. So be it. He watched me about a 1/2 mile into the race (see pic #2) and then at the finish (see pic #3). [Note that in pic #1, I'm standing on a downhill. I am short and squat, but not as bad as it looks here.] We started on one side of the zoo, ran through it, then headed north along the lakefront, and looped back for the finish on the west side of the zoo. A 10k is 6.2 miles, and I ran it in 54.35, which is an 8:49 pace -- a full minute faster than my pace for the 10-miler. It hurt a little more too, but I knew I could go the distance and as such wanted to really push myself. I finished 350 out of a field about 850. Unfortunately I wasn't feeling well last Thursday, and the repurcussions of that lasted through today with some pain and discomfort in my abdomen. It was livable, but not comfortable. I was happy with my run and am looking forward to doing some more races. It gives me a good excuse to exercise, like I said, and I just think it's fun. I loved going to Wes's baseball games in college, so now he can cheer for me!
