I have had the great fortune to spend the last five days with my sister, Laura, who came up to visit from her new home in Savannah, GA. Laura and I are four years apart (3 years, eight months, and three days -- yes, Laura) and have been pretty close our whole lives. We shared a room for many years, played together quite often, both became teachers, got married within 6 months each other, and now are both gearing up to start families. Unfortunately, ever since I've left Davidson, we've been many hours apart, and now we're a $300 plane ride away from each other. So it's not often that we see each other, let alone spend an entire week without our husbands around (Reid stayed in GA to work in his new job; Wes was on nights in the MICU). Here are the highlights of each day:Day 1: Making globs (a chocolate-peanut butter-oats no-bake cookie concoction that neither of us had eaten since our childhood).
Day 2: Riding the swings at Navy Pier and me almost wetting myself on the 75-minute (nay, 105-minute) architectural boat tour. BIG fireworks for July 3.
Day 3: Garfield Park conservatory and Second City. Senator Obama, Senator Obama.
Day 4: MEETING BART CONNOR AND NADIA COMANECI AND GETTING THEIR AUTOGRAPHS. Isn't their son cute? Tony 'n Tina's wedding was a hoot, and only Laura would enjoy it that much and make it so fun for me.
Day 5: Laura and Wes watching The Princess Bride while I fell back to sleep on the couch.
The real highlight of her being here, though, was the company that only a sister can give. We talk about everything (after all, we both talk fast, so we can get more in) and understand each other in ways our husbands and other friends never will. The best parts are the random memories that come back being together, and the most random things that make us laugh when we're together.
Most apartments have, you know, doors and walls and stuff.
