Homeless

It's been a tough few days for Lucy the Dog. Several nights ago threw up on her doggie bed. Unfortunately, this must have happened early in the night, and by the time we discovered it in the morning, it had soaked through the cover and stunk up the stuffing inside. So out went the dog bed, once again. Lucy, as you may know, has been through some beds in her lifetime. Perhaps she destroys them -- using a combination of bodily fluids -- every once in a while just to get a new one. Perhaps we are only encouraging her.

Unfortunately, since we don't have a car and I don't have a lot of disposable time these days, we couldn't replace the bed right away. We've ordered one, and it's on its way, but there were going to be a few days without a bed. This was not okay with Lucy. The first day her bed was gone, she followed me around for an hour, her eyes asking, "But where am I supposed to lie down?" I threw a beach towel on the floor, and while it wasn't great, it worked -- for a while. When I got up to nurse that night, I found that Wes had forgotten to sufficiently protect the couch, and there was Lucy, on her back, legs splayed in air, and her head on our fuzzy brown pillow. I had to get aggressive to get her off. When I got up to nurse a few hours later, I found her on our armchair, on top of the Boppy, which normally keeps her off it.

Wes was home with the baby the next day and said every time he left the room, Lucy got on our bed -- something we had successfully broken her of before the baby came. So he broke down and crafted her a bed. He got out a bathroom rug and put a trash bag and pillow cover over a spare pillow. This has been enough to console her and keep her off the furniture, fortunately. It's also a great source of amusement. She wants so badly to fit on this pillow. She curls up so tight. But the plastic underneath, which crinkles every time she moves, causes her to slide off a bit. And so she adjusts again and again.

Lucy's new bed should be here end of the week -- fortunately for all of us. And I wisely selected this time a bed that sells extra covers and inserts separately, should another travesty befall her bed. Then again, maybe she's just jealous that Oliver has so many places to sleep. She has been eyeing that co-sleeper.Posted by Picasa
