Oh, and another thing

First, the dishwasher stopped working properly.  Then, the tree began losing limbs.  And, the upstairs toilet leaked and left a stain on our kitchen ceiling.  Next, the pipe in the garage apartment burst and flooded that structure and the garage.  Finally (I hope!), one day after Emme and I came home from the hospital, the master toilet backed up.  Oh, but it wasn't just the toilet.  Because when my mom plunged it, sewage backed up into our shower and bathtub.  And after Wes emptied all the pipes and snaked them, he realized the problem was not a small one.  In fact, it was not our pipes at all.  It was the old copper pipe that connected our updated plumbing to the sewage system.  And it was overgrown with tree roots.  Some plumbers came out the next day, a holiday no less, and after confirming what Wes had found, had to drill out the pipe.  Fortunately this ended our "no draining water" period -- the 24 hours during which we couldn't flush the toilet (ewww).  They came back the next day and replaced the pipe, which of course destroyed our front lawn (which wasn't great to begin with).  Wes and Ollie worked on Sunday to regrade, remove rocks, reseed, and cover the lawn with straw.

The goods news is that we'll be able to report a lot of "upgrades" to our property when we have to sell it.  There have been several neighbors with problems with tree roots recently, so it'll be great to be able to tell prospective buyers that we've already had that fixed on our property.  The dishwasher, sadly, is still not repaired -- which deserves its own post, but is so frustrating that I can't bear to report it.  The tree has been trimmed and cabled and had nutrients injected into its roots.  The ceiling in the kitchen has been painted.  The apartment and garage are underway.  The bad news, of course, is that our house has been under construction for weeks now.  My floors are constantly dirty because of the mud out front and the drywall dust in the garage.  There's furniture being stored in the eaves and the nursery.  The house is, quite simply, out of order.

Fortunately, we've managed it all.  It's like an extra job sometimes, making decisions and writing checks and making sure things get done properly.  It's not the best timing for all this, of course.  It seems like someone up there must have a sense of humor.  Good thing we do, too.
