A bright, sunshiny day

Yesterday was an outdoorsy kind of day.  Wes and I slept in a little bit, enjoyed breakfast in the Grand Club Lounge, and picked up a rental car for the day so that we could visit some of the small towns up north of San Diego.  We drove up to La Jolla, right on the edge of Del Mar, to go to the Torrey Pines State Reserve.  It was a bit overcast and nice and cool for a couple miles of walking up to and through the reserve.  We got some spectacular views of the coast and back down onto the city.  The trails were pretty crowded, and the trails were fairly short, so we only spent about two hours there.

After that, we drove into downtown La Jolla, found some parking (which was not easy on a beautiful, Sunday afternoon), and looked for somewhere to have lunch.  We ended up at The Spot, which was airing the women's World Cup finals.  Wes had the Prime Rib Panini with french fries, I had the soup of the day, which was Chicken Tortilla, and we shared a Southwest Salad (southern California loves their avocado).  Afterwards, we headed for the coastline and the Children's Pool.  We saw lots of seals down on the rocks and learned all about the controversy surrounding the Children's Pool.  It's hard to know who's right here, but from what we saw, the swimmers and seals were co-existing pretty peacefully in the water.  It was definitely the highlight of the day.

Wes took Highway 100 down to Cabrillo National Monument.  It's right at the top of the peninsula that forms the San Diego Harbor.  I didn't realize it had limited hours, and we got there just a few minutes before it closed.  The good news was that we didn't have to ante up $5 to get in; the bad news was that we only had about two minutes to snap a few pictures and  peek around before a  loudspeaker and a security officer rather aggressively pushed us (and many other visitors) towards the exit.

We got back to the hotel around 6pm as I desperately needed to pump milk.  Wes and I discovered that we had both gotten more sun than we should have.  I guess we didn't realize how long we'd been outside over the course of the day, especially since the temperatures were so cool.  Wes's head and neck are red, and I'm a little burnt on my chest (with a white stripe where the camera strap had been).  We had some dinner in the Lounge, then went to see Horrible Bosses, which was, in fact, horrible, but still made us laugh out loud.

Today is being spent inside and relaxing on our last full day here.  Wes is at some conference sessions today.  A few are on healthcare specifically, but several just deal with leadership generally.  He attended a breakfast with Atul Guwande this morning, then heard Tom Brokaw and Mike Krzyzewski speak.  He's being recognized with the other fellows in his group this afternoon before hearing CNN's Fareed Zukaria speak.  We have dinner reservations at Searsucker, a newer restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter whose chef was a Top Chef finalist.  The menu looks interesting, and it's a short walk from the hotel.  This is my last night of fine dining for a while, I'm sure, so I'm definitely going to enjoy it.
