Conventional Wisdom

When I was visiting my parents in Atlanta, my mom and I saw an article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about potty training your child in one day by throwing a party and giving the child a Betsy-Wetsy type doll whom the child could teach to go potty, too. My mother doesn't discount the experiences of one mother and one child, but she is a little dismissive of parents who had one child and think their success with that one child is cause to write a book. I thought of her yesterday when I read this from the Chicago Tribune: "Babies held for 15 hours to 16 hours a day cried the most at night when they were 3 months old, while those held the least were heavier criers at 2 weeks and 5 weeks. Parents who took an in-between approach had quieter babies, according to researchers at the University of London. But all in all, all the babies cried a lot (emphasis mine). "

Now that's keeping things in perspective!
