Long Time Gone

My sister and I were talking on the phone last night, and she mentioned the fact that it's been a while since she posted on her blog. I, too, have slowed down since school started in full swing. I've been working long hours, especially on the weekend, and I'm still just keeping up, not getting ahead. On a positive note, the school year's been going well. Still, a rich and fulfilling (mostly) work life doesn't always make up for the absolute lack of a personal life. Still working for balance.

Laura and I also talked about how inadequate our blogs are for meeting all of our journaling needs. I originated this blog primarily to have an outlet for my writing, and it's done that. Along the way, it's also become a journal of trips, visits, funny moments, and happy events. It's not, however, the kind of cathartic outlet that a regular journal provides. There are lots of things going on in my life that weigh heavily on my mind but that are too personal or involve other people, often readers, to post about. I've never been good at keeping the "normal" kind of journal. I lapse without an audience, however small.

This made me think today about how the old show Doogie Howser, M.D. used to end (the fact that I liked that show so much should have been a sign of what was to come) -- Doogie would uwrite a short paragraph in his journal (on a now very antiquated computer) about his day. It was also precise, encapsulating both the events and tone of the day. Perhaps that's what I need for my journal.

One of the things that helps me with my journal is to keep a small notebook with me. I don't write complete sentences or worry about grammar (which may be hard for you being an English teacher). If I see something that catches my eye I write it down and just a few words to go along with it. If I decided to take my camera with me, I'll snap a quick photo of it, too. It helps store the memories without going on tangents and it teaches you to loosen up because you're not worried about conciseness or syntax or any off that technical stuff. But that's just MY journal. No one else sees it unless I want them, too. But the point is that you capture all the little things that made up your day in just a few words.

Love,
